Scholarships

Scholarships are free financial aid that does not have to be repaid, and you don't need to be a perfect student to earn them. Scholarship providers emphasize commitment (such as playing in the band all four years), special circumstances (such as overcoming a cancer diagnosis), and similar interest (such as studying for the same degree).

Basics

Types of Scholarships

Merit - awarded based on academic, athletic, artistic, or special interest accomplishments

Financial Need - awarded based on financial need

How do I find scholarships?

Search engines, local school scholarship lists, individual schools, and more!

What can I do to maximize my chance of earning scholarships?

If I earn a scholarship, is it good for every year?

It depends on the scholarship.

One-Time Award - only given once to use during one academic year

Multi-Year Award - automatically "renew" and are used in multiple years

Renewable Award - given once to use during one academic year, but students can reapply for the scholarships every year

How much are scholarships worth?

Amount varies by scholarship - some are as low as $100 while others might be as high as fully paying tuition

Get involved - play a sport or join a club

Keep your GPA high and take challenging courses

Community service or volunteer hours

Consider leadership roles - running a club, varsity in sports

College Athletics

What is NCAA?

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is a non-profit organization which manages athletic programs at many colleges and universities. The NCAA also includes conferences and sports organizations that work together in order to create the framework of rules that guides the competition.

NCAA is divided in three divisions and each of them with its own rules: NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, and NCAA Division III.

What are Divisions I, II, and III?

Every participating school falls into Division I, Division II or Division III

Divisions are based on college size, athletic program size, and the way athletic scholarships are offered

When should I register?

The NCAA recommends student-athletes register at the beginning of their junior year. There is no registration deadline, but students must be cleared by the Eligibility Center before they receive athletic scholarships or compete.

How do I register?

There is an online application at the NCAA Eligibility Center. There is a fee for applying.

What are the academic eligibility requirements?

Each Division has different eligibility requirements - See Division Tabs for details

  • Complete a certain number of high school NCAA approved core classes (see NCAA Core Courses tab)

  • Earn a minimum grade point average in these core classes
